âFuck, you actually did it,â an extremely familiar voice coming from the shadows startled me out of my thoughts, a slight clattering signalling several batons had been drawn behind me.
âStand down,â I commanded, âI know this one.â
âChrist, a leader already? Must have made you hard quick.â He stepped out of the shadows, grinning, so I could see him properly, a quiet communal sigh of relief behind me when they realised we were related. His grin faded as he glimpsed the scar that traced my cheek and jaw, down my neck, took in the darkness in my eyes.
âHey, Jameson,â I sighed, âPLEASE tell me this isnât one of your stupid ideas, this⦠thing?â
Shaking his head, he ran a tired hand over his face. âNah, I know the guys who were designing it, though,â He still looked a little shocked or in awe of my uniform, or at least itâs presence with me in it, âFerox though, Mum said you were going to try, and you bloody did it.â I allowed a small upward curl of my lip, not quite a smile, âIâd love to have seen Dadâs face when you told him you made it.â
I let the semi-smile leave my face and just looked at Jameson, saying nothing.
âOh⦠he doesnât know?â
I could feel Ti and the rest of the group watching me as very few people knew anything about my story. âDoesnât care. They disowned me after I disappeared on Selection Day.â
âFuckâ¦â A blast sounded close to our position, making everyone jump.
âShit. Jameson, this catch up is lovely and all, but we need to do this another time. Weâre supposed to be trying to rescue someone who was left behind when they evacuated this area,â I frowned, âActually, what the hell are you still doing here?â
âMeet the person who was left behind.â He at least had the decency to look embarrassed.
âHow the hell did you manage that?â Shaking my head, as he went to speak, âNo, never mind, we donât have time for you to explain, weâve got to figure out how to stop this virus before they wipe the whole section out.â
I watched his face as he thought quickly, âI know where they kept the code, I might be able to hack it and switch it off?â He grimaced, looking behind me, âbut I canât get back there yet.â He glanced up and gasped. One of the Ferox behind me swung round, and delivered a sharp crack to the mad Lucuâs head, dropping him like a stone.
âTaylor?â Ti spoke up, smiling when both Jameson and I looked at her, until Jameson grunted realising she meant me for the first time in his life.
âYeah?â
âWhat if we helped get your brother to where the code is, or to a computer at least? We could protect him, let him try to stop the madness?â
I grinned at her, then turned to Jameson. âThat could work. Jam, is it far?â
âNo, just too dangerous to do on my own.â
